In August 2026, the [“B02”] project team, members of other NuMeriQS projects and external collaborators got together at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Bonn for four days of intense work and discussion on the Kronos library for lattice field theory.
Development of the library is at a crucial stage with multiple essential features encompassing around 40k lines of code close to being ready to merge.
Because of their complexity and central nature, many design decisions need to be discussed in depth which is really only possible in person.
NuMeriQS funding enabled external collaborators to join for the entire duration of the hackathon, making the event highly productive and successful.

Many thanks to the Institute of Computer Science for giving us access to one of their computer pools!

Serena Viti will talk on

Computational Astrochemistry

In Astrochemsitry - the field that studies molecules in space - building
accurate chemical models is central to our understanding of how molecules can
form and be destroyed in space. The accuracy of such models however is
heavily dependent on the availability of complete chemical gas-phase and
solid-state reaction networks.
Due to the very non linear nature of chemistry in space, as well as the
complex interactions between the chemistry and the physics of the gas and
dust, determining the right sets of species and possible reactions between
them is not trivial. In this talk I shall give an overview of the challenges
we face when designing and optimizing networks as well as possible avenues for
solutions, including sensitivity analysis, data-driven methods and machine
learning.

Promit Ray’s title is

Smarter Molecules, Safer Models: A Virtual Chemistry AI Lab for Governed
Scientific Discovery

AI now plays a central role in proposing new molecules, optimizing materials,
and accelerating numerical modeling, yet its scientific reliability ultimately
depends on the structure and integrity of the underlying data. In this talk, I
present a practical end-to-end workflow that integrates Vivian for interactive
molecular and materials exploration, ChemLabFlow for standardized chemical and
experimental data management, and the VAIL (Virtual AI Lab) as a governed

Infinite Matrix Product States for (1+1)-Dimensional Gauge Theories

(1+1)-dimensional gauge theories provide tractable toy models for
studying non-perturbative phenomena of importance in (3+1)-dimensional
field theories such as QCD. In the past decade, tensor network methods
have enabled new lattice studies of such theories in the Hamiltonian
formalism. However, existing approaches have been limited in their
ability to maintain manifest translation invariance and locality for
non-abelian theories. In this talk, we present link-enhanced matrix
product operators (LEMPOs), a novel construction that acts on both the
physical and virtual spaces of symmetric matrix product states. LEMPOs
allow us to represent the lattice Hamiltonians of (abelian or
non-abelian) gauge theories in a local and manifestly
translation-invariant form, enabling studies on infinite lattices. We
demonstrate this method with recent results for the Schwinger model
and adjoint QCD2.

Projected Entangled Pair States for Lattice Gauge Theories with Dynamical Fermions

Gauge theories underpin much of modern physics, from the Standard
Model to effective descriptions of strongly interacting systems. While
quantum chromodynamics is perturbative at high energies,
nonperturbative tools are required in the low-energy regime. Lattice
gauge theory provides a gauge-invariant regularization well suited for
this purpose. By using Euclidean Monte Carlo simulations, this
formulation has enabled major progress. Yet important regimes — such
as finite-density fermionic systems and real-time dynamics — remain
difficult due to the sign problem and the Euclidean nature of standard
algorithms. These challenges have motivated alternative approaches,
including Hamiltonian formulations amenable to quantum simulation and
variational methods. Among the most powerful classical variational
techniques are tensor networks. In this talk, I will give a short
introduction into tensor networks and introduce a specific Ansatz,
Gauged Gaussian Projected Entangled Pair States (GGPEPS). GGPEPS are
gauge-invariant tensor-network, that allow efficient contraction in
higher spatial dimension, and avoid the sign problem due to a
variational Monte Carlo procedure. I will outline their construction,
discuss key analytical features, and demonstrate their numerical
performance on a (2+1)d Z2 lattice gauge theory with dynamical
fermionic matter.

From September 15 to September 18, 2025 we met for the second NuMeriQS
Retreat, which took
place at Kloster Steinfeld in the Eifel.

The first day was reserved for the NuMeriQS early career
researchers. On the second day we had two very intersting talks by
external researchers: Julia Westermayr and Jennifer Schober. Moreover,
we had two introductory presenatations, one by Frank Neese on the
coupled cluster algorithm and a second one by Thomas Luu and Carsten
Urbach on Lattice QCD for dummies. The status of the single projects
was presented in short talks, amended by posters. The method convenors
presented ideas on how to extend their applicabilities.

focused on the status, theoretical developments, and first
applications of Hamiltonian Lattice Gauge theories.

We had a very fruitful meeting with participants from Europe, USA, and
Japan. With keynote lectures in the mornings by internationally highly
visible researchers, and talks by the individual participants
thereafter, many relevant topics were discussed in an open and
constructive atmosphere. Also early career researchers had the
opportunity to either talk or present their work in the poster
session.

NuMeriQS co-organised from September 1 to September 5, 2025 a workshop at
the ECT* in Trento, Italia on a topic at
the heart of NuMeriQS: Hamiltonian Lattice Gauge Theories: Status,
Novel Developments, and
Applications.

With Christian Bauer, Stefan Kühn, Enrico Rinaldi and Martin Savaga we
could invite internationally highly visible researchers to deliver
keynote lectures at the beginning of the first four workshop days.
The workshop was perceived as very useful: in a very open and
collaborative atmosphere the current status of the field was assessed,
and novel ideas were discussed.

Quantum Workshop at DESY Zeuthen.

Over three days of stimulating talks and discussions, researchers from
different NuMeriQS working groups and DESY Zeuthen exchanged ideas
about their ongoing work. This fruitful interaction led to valuable
insights and accelerated progress across multiple research
projects. It also strengthened and deepened communication between the
NuMeriQS working groups and DESY. Moreover, the workshop provided
early-career researchers with the opportunity to engage in in-depth
discussions and learn from experienced scientists.

Beyond the scientific program, social activities such as shared
dinners and a stroll through Treptower Park provided valuable
opportunities for discussing and networking among all participants.

Physics Show on Tour to Ljubljana and Trieste

From September 21-29, 2024 the The Physics Show of the university Bonn has been on its first international tour since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The group of 20 students and university employees lead by Prof. Herbert Dreiner and Timo Poller visited Ljubljana and Trieste. In both places we performed the Particle Physics Show What’s (the) matter? twice. The shows in Ljubljana took place in the theatre Cankarjev Dom on September 23, while in Trieste the shows were performed at the Revoltella Museum on September 27. All the shows were sold out and very well perceived by the audience.

In addition, the physics students and Postdocs of the Universtiy of Ljubljana were given the opportunity to attend a workshop under the supervision of the Physics Show members. In small groups they discovered a number of unusual physical experiments hands on and they designed short sketches demonstrating and explaining the experiments in an entertaining fashion.

The Physics Show is co-funded by the CRC 1639 NuMeriQS.

On April 27, 2024, we officially kicked of the efforts in NuMeriQS
with two very interesting talks by Prof. Anthony Kennedy (University
of Edinburgh) and
Prof. Peter Coveney
(London).

Prof. Kennedy, as one of the inventors of the Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC)
algorithm, gave an interesting historical review of the HMC and its
modern applications. Prof. Coveney, a chemist by profession,
introduced the audience to uncertainty quantification and its use in
large scale molecular dynamics simulations.

Apart from officially starting operation - even though it started of
course beginning of April, one of the purposes of the meeting was to
introduce the CRC to the wider public of the University of Bonn, and
more specifically to the contributing departments. We are happy that
the heads of all the contributing departments,
i.e. chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics,
participated in the meeting. Moreover, the TRA Simulation
Modelling
and the TRA
Matter
were represented.

There were very interesting discussions during the reception, which
took place after the two scientific talks. We look forward to about
four more interesting years.

For more details see the meetings

Investigating energy-device systems with computational methods requires large timescales and an accurate treatment of all the atomic interactions present, thus this project aims to develop methods that can efficiently yield accurate results for this purpose. In order to overcome the limitations of conventional Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD), the project will employ Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) approaches as well as Machine Learning based Force Fields trained using ab initio data from AIMD simulations. Overall this project aims to unlock new possibilities in investigating highly complex systems and to provide valuable insights into materials used in energy devices.

This project aims to achieve large-scale implementations of
many-body electronic structure theories using automatic code generation.
The developments aims at addressing a number of pressing issues in the
Development of quantum chemical ab initio methods including legacy code,
code of uncertain correctness, code of overwhelming complexity, and hardware adaptability.
The main goal is to arrive at highly optimised codes for large scale computing platforms
While reducing development times by many orders of magnitude or enabling
the possibility of implementation of theories that are too complex for humans. The
proposed code generation chain consists of three steps: an equation generator,
a factorizer for optimal generation of intermediates, and the actual code
generator producing host- and hardware-specific high-level code.

This project aims to develop fast methods to quantify the uncertainty in
properties of liquids predicted by computational chemistry methods like
Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, Ab Initio MD (AIMD) simulations, and
Quantum Cluster Equilibrium (QCE) calculations. The focus is on liquids, such
as water, alcohols, and ionic liquids. The goal is to improve computational
efficiency by using proven and newly developed multi-fidelity approaches to
handle random errors in input quantities. By quantifying the resulting uncertainties,
the project seeks to gain a better understanding and develop new computational
methods in computational chemistry. These methods can have broader applications
and be beneficial to other projects of the CRC.

Quantum many-body systems as well as multiple other areas of physics heavily
rely on discrete time evolution using so-called Trotterization techniques. This
project aims to derive maximally precise Trotterizations at minimal
computational cost. The first goal is to construct optimised higher order
Trotter schemes for two operators based on their theoretical efficiencies.
Next, the results are going to be generalised for a higher number of operators.
The third goal is to understand and integrate in-practice deviations from the
theoretical efficiencies into the framework. Lastly, efficient Trotterization is
pivotal for digital quantum computing, and the fourth goal is hence to transfer
the results to quantum computing applications.

and the analysis of their results for liquid systems in theoretical chemistry.
The approach involves running multiple AIMD simulations simultaneously and using
novel graph algorithms to exchange and analyze trajectory data. This will enable
the study of more complex molecular systems and emergent structural properties.
The goal is to make more efficient use of computer resources, improve application
performance, and investigate complex chemical problems. The use of Modular

Periodically driven quantum many-body systems are relevant for
describing recent experiments in ultracold atom experiments and can be
characterized by the structure of the eigenstates of the unitary
generator of their dynamics. Accessing these states is a great
computational challenge due to the exponential growth of the state space
with system size and the dense structure of the generator. In this
project, we will develop a high-performance technique for calculating
exact eigenstates of such generators based on a complex polynomial
transformation and the exploitation of symmetries of the system.

The project aims to describe emergent phenomena in low-dimensional
systems, such as graphene, nanoribbons, and nanotubes, which require
strong-interaction techniques due to their highly non-linear
electronic behavior. These systems exhibit exotic phenomena tied to
their underlying topology, resulting in topological insulators and
superconductors, with potential applications in topological quantum
computing. An Effective Field Theory (EFT) will be formulated to
identify relevant degrees of freedom and investigate multi-particle
dynamics. The project will use numerical simulations to determine
Low-Energy Constants (LECs) for the EFT, considering length scales and
non-locality of topological effects in different low-dimensional geometries.

methods for lattice field theories. Predicting the average value of an observable
in a high-dimensional space is a challenging problem, typically addressed using

quadrature methods like Quasi Monte Carlo (QuasiMC) and sparse grid quadrature
can however achieve higher convergence rates. The project aims to explore these
advanced techniques for lattice gauge theories.

The project aims to improve theoretical predictions for hadron
collider experiments like the LHC. Current computational complexities
and lack of analytic solutions for the appearing integrals are among
the main obstacles to achieving the precision required by the
experiments. The project will investigate novel numerical approaches
for evaluating multi-dimensional Feynman integrals. Divergences will
be dealt with by constructing local counterterms at the integrand
level. We will then explore the application of hp-quadrature methods
for the numerical evaluation of the finite remainders, as an
alternative to to the Monte Carlo approach. The goal is to provide a
proof of concept for novel numerical algorithms to evaluate two-loop
integrals that are currently challenging to compute using conventional

The goal of this project is to determine the spectrum of baryon resonances which
encodes the key to understand the strong force at medium energies. The extraction
of the spectrum from data is challenging and sophisticated, but numerically very costly, dynamical coupled-channel
models are the method
of choice. A systematic
quantification of uncertainties, however, is so far not possible. This project
proposes to transition to Bayesian parameter estimation using the
Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) algorithm, allowing for a determination
of resonance parameter uncertainties in a statistically well-defined way.
This innovation will raise baryon spectroscopy to the next level of precision.

The main challenge in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD) computations is
efficiently solving large sparse linear systems of the form Dz = b, where D
depends on a gauge field U and a mass constant m. Current simulation methods spend more

more efficient scalable linear solvers for LQCD. This project aims to

Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods in order to investigate lattice
gauge theories from first principles. For this, efficient
digitisations of non-Abelian gauge theories will be investigated and

and Hamiltonian lattice formulations will be developed and, as a first
application, the running coupling constant in an Abelian gauge theory
in 2+1 dimensions will be determined. In the long term these
developments will offer the possibility to study gauge theories, and
in particular quantum chromodynamics, in
regions of parameter space not accessible today by using quantum

This project focuses on using tensor networks, quantum computing, and machine learning to study topological effects in lattice gauge theories (LGTs) of increasing complexity. The initial goal will be the simulation of (2+1)-dimensional LGTs with tensor networks and quantum computing, focusing on compact quantum electrodynamics (QED) with a topological Chern-Simons term. In particular, we aim to map out the phase diagram and study implications for condensed-matter physics, such as topological mass generation and the quantum Hall effect. Moreover, in collaboration with project C02, we will use machine learning enhanced Monte Carlo methods to study the Chern Simons-term in QED. Long-term plans include extending these methods to (3+1)-dimensional LGTs, including Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics with the θ-term.

to access diverse hardware architectures for benchmarking and co-design purposes
through JSC industry partners. In its first funding phase, it supports Research Software
Engineering (RSE) activities, reproducible benchmarking, application performance
engineering and scaling analysis. In subsequent funding phases this foundation
shall be extended to support the application of the numerical methods developed
within the CRC to larger and more complex chemical and physical systems
which will also require projects to employ correspondingly larger
